What is the characteristic color of lochia rubra?

Lochia rubra is characterized by its deep red color, which is primarily due to the presence of blood, decidual tissue, and other components that are expelled in the initial days following childbirth. This stage of lochia typically lasts from birth to about three to four days postpartum. The bright red color indicates fresh bleeding from the uterus as it begins to heal and contract back to its pre-pregnancy state.

In contrast, lochia that appears pink corresponds to lochia serosa, which occurs later in the postpartum period and consists of a mix of blood, serous fluid, and normal vaginal secretions. Clear lochia isn't congruent with any of the postpartum discharge stages, as some discharge remains present for several weeks. A brownish color generally indicates older blood that has taken time to oxidize and is typically associated with lochia serosa as well.
